Elon Musk might be searching for individuals to blame for the technical mishaps that occurred during Ron DeSantis's campaign launch. The launch was, in technical terms, a comical failure, with frequent sound interruptions and repeated crashes delaying its start by 20 minutes.
Ron DeSantis is likely regretting his decision to follow the advice of an advisor who proposed this unconventional campaign launch, which failed to generate the same level of support that Donald Trump, his primary rival, currently enjoys.
At the Four Seasons hotel in Miami, where campaign volunteers had gathered for the launch, people attempted to remain optimistic, dismissing the technical issues as insignificant and unimportant.
"It's more embarrassing for Elon Musk than for Ron DeSantis," one individual remarked. "If you can find a single voter in Iowa who will remember this in January, I'll give you a hundred bucks," he added.
During the subsequent Twitter session, Mr. DeSantis discussed his "war on woke," his legal battle with the Walt Disney Company, and his proposed immigration reductions. With Mr.Musk and other contributors all expressing agreement, the forum lacked any challenging discussions.
Even before the debacle, Mr. DeSantis faced criticism for choosing this method of launching his campaign. A staunch Trump supporter noted that the Twitter event was in line with Mr. DeSantis's typical approach, as it allowed him to avoid journalists' questions and a live audience.
This comment alluded to Mr. DeSantis's biggest obstacle: how he will handle interactions with the public and the media. His detractors contend that he lacks the charisma required for an effective presidential campaign.
Effective, if not exciting
I recently witnessed Mr. DeSantis in action myself during a visit to the crucial state of Iowa. He addressed a predominantly Republican audience of around 600 at a barbecue lunch in Sioux Centre.
While it is often said that he is not a natural public speaker, I found his speech effective, if not particularly captivating, as he outlined the conservative policies he has implemented in Florida.
He displayed his political instincts when he made an unscheduled stop that evening in Des Moines, just after Trump had canceled a rally due to bad weather warnings. "It's a beautiful night," Mr. DeSantis proclaimed, taking a jab at his most significant opponent.
The next day, The New York Times headline read: "DeSantis Impresses in Iowa." However, it did mention that expectations were so low that his performance was deemed good "simply by showing up and avoiding any major blunders."
He even took part in a rare photo opportunity for the cameras, wearing a personalized apron and cooking an unusually large pork chop on the grill. However, he seemed extremely uncomfortable when journalists attempted to ask him questions.
His only response was a pained expression that press officers dread.
Mr. DeSantis frequently makes facial expressions and gestures that could become embarrassing memes. His awkward laughter and peculiar head movements when faced with challenging questions create a peculiar body language that could hinder his campaign.
Following the disastrous Twitter launch, the Florida governor appeared on the more traditional medium of cable TV, specifically on the Republican-friendly Fox News network. Surprisingly, he was not asked any tough questions.
In the end, Mr. DeSantis will require a media approach that goes beyond sporadic interviews with supportive publications or platforms. He hasn't interacted much with the mainstream media up to this point, so he might run into problems when the stakes are highest.
Running for president is not the opportune moment for your first challenging, prime-time interviews.
